GFI Backup – Business Edition
Easy-to-use Business Backup Software with
Effortless Restore
GFI's business backup software GFI Backup™ 2010 – Business Edition, presents
administrators with an innovative approach to meet network data backup and
restore requirements without incurring the cost, time and accessibility issues
normally associated with traditional backup solutions.
Easy to install business backup software
GFI Backup is a fast, full-featured network business backup software solution
which applies comprehensive data backup, restore and synchronization
functionality to all files, web, Microsoft SQL servers and more. Using an
intuitive wizard-driven, point-and-click configuration, GFI Backup can be
installed in minutes and backups created with minimal effort.
Centralized configuration and backups management
Through GFI Backup’s central web-based administration console, administrators
can configure and implement company-wide backup policies in a single task.
Additionally, through the product’s agent component, users can easily create
their own personal backup and restore tasks, over and above the
centrally-created default backups. GFI Backup’s agent also enables users to
automatically synchronize their files and folders across their desktop
workstations, laptops, servers, and external drives.
No vendor lock-in compression format
GFI Backup uses standard Zip64 file format when instructed to compress and
archive, allowing for data to be easily restored should the software not be
installed on the machine or device required for recovery. This offers a great
advantage over other backup solutions which use a proprietary compression
format, effectively locking-in the user, because administrators do not need GFI
Backup solution installed to recover data from backups.

Centralized, safe and dependable business backup and restore software
Safeguard your corporate data against loss: GFI Backup 2010 – Business Edition
gives you centralized network-wide control of your business backup and recovery
needs as a defense against data loss. This process involves making a one-way
backup from the source to a backup location of your choice.
Data synchronization
File synchronization is the process of maintaining the same up-to-date version
of a file in multiple storage locations such as on both an employee’s
workstation and on his laptop. If a user adds, deletes or modifies a file in one
location, GFI Backup 2010’s synchronization function will add, delete or modify
that same file at all other locations. Through the GFI Backup 2010 – Business
Edition agent, users can be authorized to create their own synchronization jobs
over and above the centralized administrator-controlled backup operations.
Combined data backup and end-user synchronization abilities
GFI Backup 2010’s innovative combination of company-wide data backup with
synchronization via the user agent provides:
- Traditional file backup and restore of data contained on individual
servers and workstations
- Backup of files located on servers and workstations which meet a
specific group set (e.g., financial files, productivity files, images and
designs)
- Synchronization of files across several workstations, servers and
laptops.
- Synchronization of files between backup servers enabling the creation of
redundant backups
- Synchronization of shared folders
- Synchronization of folders across multiple workplaces for a user.
Web-based administration interface
GFI Backup gives you access to its central administration console from anywhere
in the network, accessible through the use of your web browser. From outside
the network, the administrator can open the firewall to access the GFI Backup
2010 administrative console using HTTP on port 5580 or using HTTPS on port 5543
(recommended). Unlike most traditional backup products, you do not need a VPN
connection to do this. Using the interface, you can create, assign, manage, run,
delete, analyze and run restore operations all remotely. The GFI Backup
Administration Console handles all the communication needed with the individual
agents on the remote computers.
The tree-view file manager allows you to see all the files that are in a
backup task and the new files that will be stored in the next backup session.
The GFI Backup 2010 - Business Edition agent starts automatically (this option
can be disabled from the program options) at Windows start-up and can be
accessed from the system tray. You can also configure GFI Backup not to allow
users to access and manage their own personal tasks.
Single backup task functionality which applies to all your web, SQL,
file servers etc.
Through GFI’s approach to network backup management, you can create a single
backup task which backs up all required files and applies that task to all
authorized GFI Backup agents. GFI Backup communicates with its agents and
assigns them the single task you have configured. This differs from traditional
backup software where you need to create a single backup task for each computer
you want that task to run on, or even worse, to create multiple copies of that
task and have to manage them in a distributed fashion.
Using GFI Backup, you have only one place to go to (web-based Administration
Console) and from the comfort of your browser, you can create/select the task
you want to manage, configure the changes and apply it. GFI Backup handles the
provisioning, scheduling and execution for you!
Uses standard Zip archives
Unlike traditional backup software, GFI Backup 2010 - Business Edition does not
use proprietary archive formats but uses the standard Zip file format when
instructed to compress and archive. This means data can be restored manually
from the backup even if GFI Backup is not installed. You can choose to create
self-extracting archives as well as backups without compression for faster
processing and redundancy. If using Zip compression, GFI Backup can split and
span the archive over multiple hard-drives.
While traditional backups store their backups in a form of container or
aggregate file (e.g., a BAK file), GFI Backup not only easily recovers file when
the need arises, but also reduces the possibility of file corruption which would
render the entire backup/restore operation useless. Another advantage is that
there is no lock-in to a single vendor!
Furthermore, as you do not have a big archive file, GFI Backup output works
well with third-party offsite storage services as only modified files need to be
re-synchronized to the remote site. This approach presents great cost savings
for companies bound by legal requirements and corporate governance and which
require data backup, synchronization and offsite synchronization.
Support for Unicode
GFI Backup 2010 now supports Unicode, the industry standard for universal
character encoding. This means that GFI Backup can support non-Greco/Latin
character sets such as Chinese, Russian and others .
Back up to all popular storage devices, plus offsite backup storage
via FTP
GFI Backup 2010 - Business Edition allows you to back up on internal or external
hard disks, on local area network (LAN) locations such as network paths as well
as NAS Devices, CD/DVD/Bluray media, removable media devices (USB sticks, memory
sticks, flash memory, floppy disks, etc.), as well as remote locations using FTP
with upload auto-resume.
Restore to alternative location
GFI Backup 2010 now allows you to restore your backed up data to a location of
your choice. Usually after a backup, data can only be restored to its original
location. However, GFI Backup 2010 enables the user to specify an alternative
path to output the restored file set.
Encryption support - AES 256-bit
GFI Backup 2010 - Business Edition uses military-strength 256-bit AES-
encryption to protect backed-up data privacy. AES encryption has been adopted by
the National Institute of Standards and Technology as an FIPS-approved (Federal
Information Processing Standard) symmetric encryption algorithm that should be
used by US Government organizations (and others) to protect sensitive
information.
Daily activity email digests
GFI Backup 2010 – Business Edition can be configured to send error or warning
notification emails, backup log files and summary reports for each completed
backup task to a configurable list of recipients.
Additional notification support is available through the user of event log
entries which can be used to integrate within your existing log monitoring
infrastructure. An example of the latter would be using GFI EventsManager to
monitor for the success/failure of backup events as part of your integrated
network health management solutions.
Predefined include/exclude search filters
GFI Backup provides a number of backup target parameters which allow you to mix
and match depending on your backup needs. You can instruct GFI Backup to back up
all files contained in a drive or path location. You can also instruct GFI
Backup to back up only files in a drive or location which meet a specific
restriction, such as include *.doc file types but exclude all *.tmp files. This
helps control the size of storage needed for backup operations.
Out of the box, GFI Backup also presents a set of pre-configured group
category sets such as ‘Productivity Files’ (which includes these file types:
*.xls, *.xlsx, *.doc, *.docx, etc.) making configuration of backup tasks easy
and intuitive. You can also create your own category groups.
The include/exclude filters can be configured to include/exclude temporary
system files.
Back up open files using Volume Shadow Copy Service
You can back up files even if they are still open using the Windows Volume
Shadow Copy Service (Microsoft VSS). Out-of-the-box, GFI Backup is enabled to
make use of the Microsoft VSS to backup files that are in use by other
applications such as Microsoft Outlook PST files.
Selective retrieval of individual files, folders, directories, full
or individual backups
Through the use of point-and-click wizards, GFI Backup enables you to choose
between making a full restore of the data backup or individually select which
items are to be restored from the backup set.
Incremental and differential backups
GFI Backup 2010 - Business Edition can be configured to back up only new and
changed files (incremental), or to delete from the current backup the files that
no longer exist in the source location (differential). GFI Backup also provides
a version control mechanism that allows you to keep multiple versions of a file
in stacked backups.
Data Integrity
GFI Backup 2010 – Business Edition carries out CRC verification of each file it
copies during the backup process to ensure the integrity and consistency of
those files.
Built-in easy-to-use task scheduler
GFI Backup 2010 - Business Edition does not rely on the standard Windows Task
Scheduler, but implements a more advanced, highly configurable, inbuilt
scheduling mechanism. It supports these scheduling options:
- Run manually
- Run on Windows start-up/shutdown
- Run hourly/daily
- Run periodically.
You can also configure a schedule to run every few days (e.g., every three
days) but not run if the day of the schedule happens to be on a Wednesday.
Detailed logs of all backup operations
GFI Backup 2010 – Business Edition produces and logs detailed information on the
operations it has performed, the files it backed up as well as any important
analytical information. These logs are made available both at the agent side as
well in summarized format at the administration console side (unless there is a
problem which needs investigation, at which point the full log is made available
for analysis within the administration console).
