These devices are far superior to a modem or multi-port modem in terms of reliability and transmission speed. Modems can be unreliable, requiring regular resets, and are frequently not compatible with all fax machines, resulting in failed faxes. The chipset used is an important factor; however, since modem manufacturers constantly change the chipset it is difficult to recommend a particular model or brand. This is a hardware issue and has nothing to do with the fax server software!

In terms of cost, a Brooktrout TruFAX, EICON or AVM card is relatively inexpensive: A 2-port card can be had for about $300-$500. The per port cost is $150-$250 and is therefore only marginally more expensive than using 2 modems. Depending on what card you choose, you also get more fax features - for example, inbound routing or faster 33.6 faxing. The slight increase in cost is easily justified in terms of reliability and reduced administration!

ISDN cards supported

If you have access to ISDN lines it is recommended to get an ISDN connection. ISDN lines give you advanced inbound routing capabilities, and in addition ISDN fax cards automatically support faxing on 2 channels or more.

EICON

Model: EICON Diva Pro 2.0 having 1 BRI interface. This card has a limitation, if 1 channel is transmitting (being sending or receiving) the other channel must wait for the transmitting channel to finish.
Model: EICON Diva Server BRI-2M having 1 BRI interface.
Model: EICON Diva Server BRI-2M 2.0 having 1 BRI interface.
Model: EICON Diva Server 2FX having 1 BRI interface.

AVM

Model: AVM-B1v3 having 1 BRI interface. This card has a limitation, if 1 channel is receiving the other channel must wait for the receiving channel to finish. Both channels can send simultaneously though.

Model: AVM-C4 having 4 BRI interfaces. This is equivalent to four AVM-B1v4 interface cards in one.

The GFI FAXmaker Brooktrout TruFAX Series driver is the same GFI FAXmaker driver for the Brooktrout TR1034 Series cards (above).

Brooktrout TR114 Series
The GFI FAXmaker Brooktrout TR114 Series driver uses version 4.3 of the Brooktrout API. All cards that are supported by this API can be used with GFI FAXmaker. The following is a guide line of the cards that are supported by GFI FAXmaker:

Notes:

3. The PRI interface Euro-ISDN cards are not supported. For PRI support see the supported Brooktrout TR1034 series cards below.
4. Multiple TR114 cards in one machine are supported.
5. Brooktrout's TR114+I8P card is similar to the TR114+I8V. However, to install correctly the TR114+I8P, follow the instructions in digital.cfg found in the GFI FAXmaker directory. Since the TR114+I8P is a PEB card, the MVIP line should be disabled, while the PEB line should be enabled.

Brooktrout TruFAX Series
The GFI FAXmaker Brooktrout TruFAX Series driver is the same GFI FAXmaker driver for the Brooktrout TR114 Series cards (above).

Modems

GFI does not recommend the use of a modem. Although there are quality modems on the market, it is better to choose a fax card or an active ISDN card. You can use modems either using the GFI fax modem drivers (class 2) or the Microsoft fax modem drivers (supports class 1, class 2 and class 2.0). If you insist on using modems, the following modems have been used with GFI FAXmaker:

Please note that while using the Microsoft Fax Modem Drivers, you can support a maximum of 2 modems on Microsoft Windows 2000, 4 modems on Windows 2003 and only 1 modem on Microsoft Windows XP. If you want to run multiple lines we recommend using multi-line hardware such as ISDN cards or Brooktrout fax cards.
